Are your furs ethically sourced?

At our company, we believe in ethical sourcing of furs and are strongly opposed to any kind of animal cruelty or illegal trade. We take great care to ensure that our furs are sourced in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations, including the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) laws. We are committed to sustainability and recognize that fur is a natural, eco-friendly product that is 100% renewable, biodegradable, and recyclable.

In addition to our commitment to ethical and sustainable sourcing, we are proud to say that many of our furs are obtained as by-products of feral pest control. This means that the animals from which the furs are harvested are considered pests that pose a threat to livestock or native species. By using these furs, we are helping to manage populations of these feral animals and reduce their impact on the environment.

We also work closely with our suppliers to ensure that they share our values and adhere to our ethical and sustainable sourcing standards. We believe that transparency is key, and we are happy to provide information about the origins of our furs and the processes involved in their production. When you purchase a fur product from us, you can be confident that it has been sourced with the utmost care and respect for the environment and the animals involved.

We acknowledge that the definition of ethical can vary among individuals. That's why we prioritize transparency when it comes to the sourcing of our products.

Why are some furs so expensive?

Some animals like wolves, bears, bobcat, lynx, otter etc are listed on the CITES. The CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between governments. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival.

If you would like to learn more about the CITES please follow this link: https://www.cites.org/eng/disc/what.php

This means that EVERY CITES animal that comes into Australia has to have a lot of documentations and permits proving that it was harvested in accordance with the CITES laws. Due to the laws and the way they are brought into the country the importer is also chargers MANY other fees like GST, quarantine inspection fees, broker fees, and many more. On top of all these fees & paperwork it takes anywhere from 8-12 month to organise all the paperwork and permits to import. This means that ALL of these fees are on top of what the furs cost in the first place. Also the majority of these imported fur come from either USA or Canada which also means that the currency exchange rate is also a factor when determining what they cost to import and as the exchange rate is constantly changing so too is the price of the furs.

If you ever see a fur for sale in Australia that is on the CITES but does not come with paperwork it is possible that it has been imported illegally and if you were to be caught with illegally imported goods you could face fines and possible imprisonment. So please make sure you ask for a copy of the CITES paperwork when you buy anything listed on the CITES appendix.

You can rest easy if you buy a CITES item from Fox Hollow Taxidermy as we strictly follow the laws and the prices listed INCLUDE ALL of the paperwork legally required to own these beautiful items

What is a "soft mount"?

Traditional taxidermy is applying a fur skin over a rigid form to create a realistic looking statue. These are set in one pose, rigid and although you would be able to pick them up and move them (depending on size of the animal) basically non-mobile. A soft mount is a soft fur skin with only the head mounted over a rigid form. This leaves the body to be filled with plush filling, sometimes wire or other armatures can be inserted to give the animal a more realistic, natural look however this is usually also covered with some form of filling or wadding. Due to this method it means the animal is able to carried easier, cuddled and squeezed and can be posed into many different poses. The Soft mounting process can basically be applied to any animal however animals like cow, deer, horses etc with long skinny legs tend to look a tad odd as soft mounts but it is still possible. Soft mounting has become a popular way for people to preserve their pets as they can still be cuddled and curled up at the end of the bed.

Fox Hollow Taxidermy specialises in making soft mounts, you can see many of my soft mounts in the "commission" section of this website. Any of the furs in the "Mountable skins" section of my shop would be able to be soft mounted.
